I have played all the major space strategy games since Master of Orion, including the highly overrated Galactic Civilizations II Ultimate Edition; this is the first modern game that can compare with the great MOO. Furthermore, all the bug fixing has been done and expansion packs included in one download, making this title a tremendous value. The best innovation in SOTS is the interstellar travel methods; each of the six species has its own. Some can go wherever they want; another has to build teleport gates first and defend them carefully; still, others have to follow limited pre-set routes. Just this idea introduces totally different gameplay among the species. Add in a freshly scrambled tech tree for each new game, and you have immense re-playability... Here, I finally fond the best of both worlds. The various races really feel like different races, with decidedly different ship designs (even propulsion systems, which greatly alter the strategic game) and semi-random tech trees making handling each one an entirely different experience (although the variation in trees also means that that "perfect" design you used last time may not be available this time). Repeatability is high, even if you might tire sometime of fighting the same battles time and time again. Graphics are above average, with individually moving (and destructible!) turrets with their own fields of fire and refire rates. The only sad thing is that ship movement orders are tied to two dimensions (although movement is not, due to the effects of ballistic fire, tractor... Works great on Windows 7 64-bit with a $60 graphics card. It's complicated and the tutorial videos do help but in the end trial and error is how you're going to have to figure it out. If you're like me and have worn out just about every other genre of game out there this is a good one to begin exploiting. The game is designed for multiplayer but it has singleplayer too against AI opponents and the AI is good. There is no real campaign to speak of. If there is I have yet to find it. There are a bunch of apparently unrelated scenarios but the real gem of this game is the custom designing. You can create galaxies, the number, size and distance of planets, numbers of alien races, etc, etc. All in all it's a great game. It's one of the few that I could see myself giving a solid 5 stars but to me 5 stars implies perfection and there is no such thing as perfection, however, the developers of this game seem to have gone to great length to...
