I've been playing EU for ten years now, and while I don't always like the changes (as patches progressed in EU2, I went back to 1.05 from 1.08, for example). EU3 is the best of the bunch, best looking, best playability. As I write this it's ridiculously cheap for the main game and all the expansions but Divine Wind, if you like this type of game, you must buy EU: Chronicles. Also, the original music is fantastic, my daughter put it on her iPod.

What the game is: Europa Universalis starts in 1399 (though you can pick any date), and ends in 1821. You can play any country in existence at the time, and with a bit of effort many which no longer existed. You can conquer the world as France, England or Spain (Castile). Explore as Portugal, or play an American Indian tribe and try to fend off the Europeans, to say nothing of the many asian countries or those in Africa or the middle east. This is a true strategy game, so don't think that you can build fifty zergs and rush... Read more

I got the idea in my head recently that I wanted to basically build an army and take over the world... or at least Europe. This game was a fine means of indulging my world (or Europe) domination plans. I found it to be a fairly difficult game at first and even as I figured things out and got better stayed pretty challenging. (Having bought it by download and not having an instruction manual did not help I'm sure. I had to go with 4 stars because though I did enjoy the game at first it just didn't hold my interest like I thought it might. I don't regret the purchase and it piqued my interest enough that I may come back to it at some point. If you buy it I hope that you enjoy and thanks for taking the time to read my review.

If you are a grand strategy fan then this is the game for you. EU III focuses on developing the economic, social, political, cultural, and social (basically everything)structures of your country. You can choose any country, empire, or state that existed within the period. The start date is 1399, but you can start anytime between then and 1821 (when the game ends). The game is interesting, because actual historical events can happen (maybe a different time or in a different way than actual history) if you or the AI meet certain requirements within the game. I enjoy the nice balance of actual history and alternate history that the game gives. I will say that the game has a very steep learning curve, but if you put in a couple of hours to learn it then this game can be fantastic and so rewarding!

I'm a world history teacher and I wish I could figure out some way to use this game in my classroom without it being too boring or take too much time, but I haven't figured that out... Read more
